Our first trip of the year for 2018 was to Charleston, South Carolina. Aside from the fact that we arrived just a few days after the third largest snowfall in the city’s history, much of Charleston reminded me of the Caribbean, and it wasn’t just the palm trees. Looking more closely at the City’s history, it appears that I was closer to the Caribbean than I thought. Many Americans think of the United States as being settled by colonists from England, escaping religious persecution in their homeland. Typically, what comes to mind is the first permanent settlement by colonists in 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia. The settlement of Charleston, South Carolina,…

It’s that time of year for a ghost story, so come along with us as we visit the Haunted House of Harbour Island, Bahamas, also known as the Glen Stewart Mansion. The Haunted House is not much of a mystery as far as its location, as it appears on pretty much every map I’ve seen of the island. They even had, at one time, a gift shop. Follow the pink signs! The mystery surrounds the strange circumstances under which the the original owners left. The story goes that the home was built in 1945 by a wealthy family. The owner left one day for medical tests and never returned. Presumably,…

It’s hard to know what to say or do after something as catastrophic as Hurricane Irma, which plowed a path of destruction from the island of Barbuda, through the Caribbean islands, to the United States. We are safely here in the midwest, hearing only pieces of the coverage from our beloved islands. We hear accounts of the storm itself, roaring for hours like the sound of two subway trains passing at full speed. There is the heartbreaking account of the toddler torn from his caregiver’s arms as she tried to escape a collapsing building. Trees have had all their leaves ripped from their limbs. There is no electricity, no water,…

Some people think that when you’re on an island known for its natural beauty, there are few things to do but recline in a beach chair and soak up the sun. Although that’s certainly an option on Nevis, there are loads of things to do when you’re not relaxing. If you’re looking for things to do on the island, here’s our Top 10 Nevis! Enjoy a Killer Bee Some people make the trip to Nevis just for the “Killer Bee” at the famous Sunshine’s beach bar on Pinney’s Beach. Few know exactly what is in this potent cocktail, other than a lot of rum and a sprinkle of fresh nutmeg…

Since returning to film photography a few years ago, I make a point of taking at least one film camera on each trip. Part of the reason is that I love the look of film. I also love playing with my old cameras and trying different techniques. Traveling to Nevis, I packed two film cameras, the Canon 1v, which uses all the same lenses as my DSLR, and the Mamiya 645 Pro TL with the 80mm f/1.9 and the 45mm f/2.8 lenses. I decided to try some slide film, so I packed a few rolls of Fuji Velvia 100 RVP, along with my trusted stocks, Kodak Ektar 100, Fuji 400H,…

This trip to Nevis, we checked out the new YU Lounge at the airport in St. Kitts. YU Lounge has locations in St. Kitts and Mauritius, providing VIP transfers to and from the airport. However, in St. Kitts, you can only use the services on the front end of your trip. Due to some regulations, they cannot offer you services on your return trip. However, they do a wonderful job, allowing you to skip the lines for entry into the country and have a seamless and enjoyable transfer to your resort. First, they pick you up on the tarmac. Their Porsche Cayenne SUVs are waiting for you, and they immediately transport…

Double Deuce is one of our favorite beach bars on Nevis, going back to our visits there in 2011. Since then, the bar moved location a bit, but it remains one of our favorites on the island. First, the location. It’s still on Pinney’s Beach, but it’s closer to the Four Seasons than it used to be. Back in 2011, you walked past Sunshine’s, went around a curve in the beach and found Double Deuce. Now, Double Deuce is in the grouping of beach bars extending from the main road all the way to Sunshine’s. It’s no longer directly in front of the beach, back behind Turtle Time, but the…
