Spirits of the Caribbean: Sands, Bahamas

    April 7, 2014 / No Comments

It’s National Beer Day here in the United States, the day we celebrate the Cullen-Harrison Act, signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which went into effect on April 7, 1933.  The Cullen-Harrison Act legalized the sale of 3.2% beer and wine, which had been prohibited by the 1919 Volstead Act.  Subsequently, Congress passed the Blaine Act, which enacted the 21st Amendment, repealing the 18th Amendment’s prohibition on alcohol sales on December 5, 1933. Our celebration today is with a Bahamian beer, Sands.  Sands, marketed as a “Truly Bahamian Beer,” was launched in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island on December 15, 2007.  If you happen to be on Grand Bahama…

Spirits of the Caribbean: Red Stripe, Jamaica

    July 28, 2013 / No Comments

Red Stripe was first brewed in Jamaica in 1928, first as a dark brown ale, and a few years later as the golden lager which we know today.  Red Stripe has a connection to another favorite brew, Guinness.  Red Stripe is currently owned by Diageo, a company formed in 1997 through a merger of Guinness (yes, that Guinness), and Grand Metropolitan.  Diageo’s brands include Red Stripe, Guinness, Smithwick’s, Kilkenny, Harp, Tusker, Satzenbrau, Senator, and Windhoek. Hooray Beer! Cheers! SaveSave SaveSave

Spirits of the Caribbean: St. John Brewers, St. John, USVI

    July 23, 2013 / No Comments

The story of St. John Brewers is the kind of thing you talk about doing one day as you sit on the beach with a cold beer in your hand.  It’s the fantasy of leaving the big city job in the States and starting a brewery in the islands.  For Chirag Vyas and Kevin Chipman, friends and former roommates at the University of Vermont, it was reality, and we’re jealous as hell. Chirag, a scientist at NASA, and Kevin, a physical therapist at a Boston medical center, learned just a few years out of college that the daily 9 to 5 grind was not for them.  They moved to islands,…

Spirits of the Caribbean: Carib, Trinidad & Tobago

    July 20, 2013 / No Comments

Carib Lager is found all over the Caribbean, but finds its origins in Trinidad and Tobago.  First brewed in 1950, the 5.2% ABV lager is as popular now as ever.  With arrangements made in advance, you can tour the brewery. If you are on St. Kitts and want to set up a tour of the brewery there, contact our friends at Pereira Tours for information.  Cheers! SaveSave
