I am thrilled to announce that I was awarded a Bronze in the Architecture category in the annual Bill Muster Photography Awards, just announced by the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW). The awards are named for Bill Muster, a celebrated photographer who generously established a foundation to support this annual competition. The awards were announced at the organization’s convention this week in Haywood County, North Carolina.
The image was taken in May of this year at Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France. I knew I wanted an image with the enormous clock faces on the museum, but capturing it wasn’t easy. We were there immediately after the museum opened, but apparently we weren’t the only ones with that idea. I did pause for a few minutes to let the crowds clear and was eventually able to capture this couple silhouetted against the strong backlight.

I captured the image with my Fujifilm GFX 50R and the compact Fujifilm GF 50mm f/3.5 R LM WR lens. The strong morning light makes it easy to blow out the details outside the windows, but the 50R does an impressive job of retaining detail in those bright areas, allowing me to recover some of it in processing.
This was my first time entering the Bill Muster competition. I have to admit, the competition is a bit intimidating. Look at the images of the past winners and they represent the some of the best photography in the profession. I am honored to be included among this outstanding group.
Please take a few moments to look at the images in this winners’ gallery. The work is inspiring, and motivates me to keep shooting, keep learning, and keep improving.
