I love shooting film, in part, because of the thrill of seeing what you captured. Unlike digital, where you have immediate feedback, you never quite know what you’ve got until you either develop your film or receive it back from your lab. With double exposures, the excitement is that much better. It’s not just a matter of what you have captured, but how you lined up the two exposures to reveal an entirely new composition. Here’s a super quick step-by-step guide on how I shoot double exposures on film. When you think about a double exposure on film, you have to know the basics of how exposure works. When you…

It is remarkable how Anguilla has bounced back after Hurricane Irma, but there is a noticeable loss. Smokey’s at the Cove was our go-to place on Saturday afternoons. I remember our first trip to Anguilla, and walking down to Smokey’s from the CuisinArt. We heard the Musical Brothers playing Bob Marley tunes and Christmas carols, and it was as if we had found our heaven on earth. But Irma came, Smokey’s was heavily damaged, and the Gumbs family had no plans for reopening. We had pretty much given up on Smokey’s being anything but a memory. Then we found our way to The Place. Rumor had it that “Smokes,” the…

I love Sunday afternoons at Da Vida on Anguilla. Omari Banks and his band perform, so you know you’ll have great music accompanying your lunch. The thing I love the most about Sunday afternoons is that families gather together. I love the buzz of families and friends enjoying a meal and catching up. This Sunday was even more special as we celebrated a birthday, the 26th birthday of Anguilla’s own Miss Universe Great Britain, Dee Ann Kentish-Rogers! If you haven’t heard Dee Ann’s story, it’s pretty inspirational, and tells a story of a very determined and gifted young woman. Dee Ann was a heptathlete, representing Anguilla in the Commonwealth Games.…

This trip to Anguilla was our fifth trip since 2007, but we had never been to Jacala before. For the first couple trips, it was not possible as Jacala opened in 2010 when Jacques Borderon and Alain Laurent left Malliouhana‘s Michel Rostang to start their own restaurant. Despite trips in 2010 and 2014, we had never made it to Jacala. Hearing all the raves, we made a point of making a reservation for dinner upon arrival. We loved it so much, as we left dinner, we immediately made a reservation for lunch a few days later. Jacala is on Meads Bay, just west of Blanchard’s. Along the beach, there are…

Taking on a legend is never easy. People will remember a place or experience and it’s not easy to do justice to the memory. When Belmond took on the task of renovating the jewel of Anguilla resorts, Cap Juluca, people were optimistic that this was the right group to take on the task, and they were not disappointed. Belmond’s Cap Juluca is a grand tribute, worthy of the original. Originally conceived to showplace the island as a luxury tourism destination, Cap Juluca realized that ideal. Mr. Robin Ricketts and Mrs. Sue Ricketts of Ricketts & Associates, Ltd., and Charles and Linda Hickox, the principal owners of Leeward Isles Resorts, were…

One of the great features of digital photography, aside from the instant gratification of knowing you’ve got the shot, is that the cameras record your settings, the metadata, assisting you in evaluating what worked and what did not. Most film cameras had no way of recording the settings used, requiring that the photographer keep meticulous notes, which could be consulted once the film was returned from the lab. As film photography developed over the years, manufacturers were able to design film cameras which recorded the shooting information. However, extracting the information from the camera required special software and a cable proprietary to the manufacturer. In researching the purchase of my Canon…
