It’s National Beer Day here in the United States, the day we celebrate the Cullen-Harrison Act, signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which went into effect on April 7, 1933. The Cullen-Harrison Act legalized the sale of 3.2% beer and wine, which had been prohibited by the 1919 Volstead Act. Subsequently, Congress passed the Blaine Act, which enacted the 21st Amendment, repealing the 18th Amendment’s prohibition on alcohol sales on December 5, 1933. If you read our posts on Eleuthera, you can tell that we loved the pink sand. I had seen many photos of French Leave Beach and Harbour Island before our visit and some looked a bit unreal – – almost a cotton candy hue. I suspected that many of these images are the result of a heavy hand on the saturation slider in the photographer’s post-processing. Often we take a photo, and are frustrated in that it did not capture the color that well. We snap a shot, and the beach looks white or beige, not what we saw at the time. Is that sand really pink? I have always wanted to go to Carnival in the Caribbean, but we never seemed to be in the islands at the right time. My friend and photographer, Brian Sprague, and his friend, Sarah, celebrated their birthdays in in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and were kind enough to share their experiences, including Carnival! For those new to the area, the Dominican Republic is one of two nations on the island of Hispanola, the other being Haiti. It’s time for a day trip! The fifth part of our Eleuthera trip report takes us on a day trip to another of the islands of the Bahamas, Harbour Island. Harbour Island, “Briland” to the locals, is located just a mile or two off the coast of Eleuthera. Although it is only 3-1/2 miles long and 1-1/2 miles wide, the island boasts a number of luxurious accommodations, along with many restaurants and shops, all in a classic Bahamian style. Not all of our time was spent on the beach. Unfortunately, during our stay, we saw a bit of rain, but that’s a perfect time to get into town and take a look around. Join us on a walking tour of Governor’s Harbour! The building which stands out most in Governor’s Harbour is the blue and yellow building with the Kalik logo which once housed Pyfrom’s Liquor. The store is closed and the building is now for sale, as you can see from the sign. I hope the new owner never changes the color, or I might just get lost in Governor’s Harbour.
