Lately, I’ve been back to shooting film, shooting both digital and film cameras on our recent trips to Anguilla, Antigua, and Barbuda. Along for the journey were several film cameras, including the Canon EOS 1v. The 1v was Canon’s last professional 35mm SLR camera, with a magnesium alloy body and weather sealing throughout. At 10 frames per second, it was a favorite of sports shooters for years. It is a solidly built camera, and fits perfectly in my hand like the later DSLRs that Canon produced. Knowing that we were traveling to Barbuda, where I expected a beautiful night sky, I planned to try to shoot the Milky Way. I had never done it before, but why not? So I did a bit of research and here’s how I planned for shooting the Milky Way and the results. Step 1: Get away from the city! Recently, Olympus rolled out the latest version of its Tough camera, the Olympus Tough TG-4. This camera stands out among its competitors for offering RAW capture in an underwater compact camera at a reasonable price. I’m not really a big “activity” person when it comes to vacation. As long as I have a nice beach and beautiful water to swim in, I’m pretty much set. We’re back from a very restful stay at the CuisinArt Resort on the beautiful island of Anguilla. This was our fourth trip to the island, and our second stay at the CuisinArt. The resort is located on Rendezvous Bay with views of Ste. Maarten/St. Martin in the distance. This two-mile stretch of beach is great for beach walkers, and those who like to stop for a drink or two are just a stroll away from Bankie Banx’s Dune Preserve and Garvey’s Sunshine Shack. In June, I participated in “A Travel Story with Kevin Miyazaki,” an online travel photography class hosted by Jessica Kaminski’s JsKool. Participants were from various parts of the country, with some traveling during the month. Kevin gave us assignments on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and your assignment was due before the next assignment was issued. There were a total of 13 assignments over the course of the month. Participants posted their photos in the online Facebook group dedicated to the class, so people were free to share their successes and failures and openly discuss their work.
