At My Irie Time, we offer traditional paper prints of you favorite island images, but also offer metal prints and prints on canvas. Canvas prints offer a unique look, which is reminiscent of paintings on canvas. In fact, I had someone in my office the other day who asked me if I had painted them myself!
Not all canvas suppliers are equal, and beware of those who use cheap processes or materials. Here is a good example of a discount canvas supplier. I ordered this sample to see the quality offered by this lab given their “bargain” prices. When you checked out the construction, you realized that this was no bargain. The canvas was glued to cardboard and was stuffed with styrofoam.
In a humid climate, it’s not long before that canvas is trash. Why did I rip apart this canvas? Well, they printed it incorrectly to boot, so I decided to check out the quality of the build, given that it was already a loss. We have also noticed flaking of the print from the canvas. Those products are not worth your investment.
We use high quality suppliers who stretch the canvas over solid wood frames, to give you a durable product. We have ordered many canvases over the years from our suppliers and are impressed by the consistency in the quality of the finished product.
Take for example this 30″ by 40″ canvas. I have had it displayed in my master bathroom for over two years. It is not recommended to use it in an environment where it is exposed to high humidity, such as in a bathroom, but I was willing to take the chance given that it was perfect for the room. Despite two years of exposure to high humidity (there is also a shower in that bathroom which is used twice daily), the canvas still looks great. The hidden edges are rippled a bit given the extreme conditions, but the canvas has not sagged and looks fantastic. The cardboard canvas wouldn’t have had a chance of survival.
Canvases require little extra care. Our supplier recommends the following care instructions
1. Treat your gallery wrap just like any other piece of art. As with any artwork you may experience some unwanted scratches and nicks. These can be touched up with any type of archival ink pen or marker which can be purchased at your local art or craft store.
2. When choosing the perfect spot for your canvas, we recommend placing the canvas where it will not be subject to direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Though your canvas is sprayed with a UV Protector, over exposure to sunlight can cause discoloration and damage of your print.
3. In addition to the direct sunlight, it is best to avoid extreme temperatures and humidity. This can cause the canvas to become loose and sag on the stretcher bars. If this occurs just lean your canvas against a soft surface, and mist the open back of your print with warm water. As the canvas dries it will tighten back up.
4. If you would need to clean your canvas just use a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth and gently wipe away dirt and dust. Do not use any type of cleaning products or other chemical solutions. This may have a reaction with the UV Protection spray.
Traditionally, canvases come in a depth of 1-1/2 inches, however, our lab is able to offer canvases at 3/4 inch or 2-1/2 inches at an extra charge. Just ask for a price quote by using our Contact Page!
