You know you want to honeymoon in the Caribbean, but which island? The islands are incredibly diverse. Some have better beaches. Some are ideal for foodies. Some islands are favorites for adventure. The islands are as diverse as the people who visit. Here are some suggestions for the perfect Caribbean honeymoon. Best Islands for Beach Lovers Anguilla Anguilla is located at the northern end of the Leeward Islands chain in the Eastern Caribbean, a short 25-minute boat ride north of St. Martin. You won’t see any mountains or rainforest on Anguilla, as it is largely coral and limestone with limited vegetation. However, what it lacks in elevation, it makes up…

There’s an old rhyme about hurricane season in the Caribbean: “June too soon, July stand by, August come it must, September remember, and October all over . . .” Unfortunately, this year, October was not “all over” as Hurricane Matthew slowly crept through the Caribbean and up the coast of the United States. After nearly two weeks, it left over 1,000 dead, along with the destruction of buildings, trees, and essential public services in its wake. Directly in its path was the island of Andros, which we just visited a few months ago when all was calm and peaceful. Hurricane Matthew left the island without power, water, or sanitation, and left many homes and…

We explored Rat Cay Blue Hole and Captain Bill’s Blue Hole on our visit to Andros, Bahamas. Here’s some video of Rat Cay Blue Hole. You will remember from reading our post that I described a strong current of cool water coming from the blue hole. I have to fight that current at the beginning of the video to pan over the blue hole. Near the end of the video, I let the current draw me back over the hole, and you can see just how strong it is. Enjoy this oceanic blue hole! Rat Cay Blue Hole from My Irie Time on Vimeo. For more of our posts on…

It was at dinner one night at Kamalame Cay that we ran into a gentleman we had met at the luncheon our first day on the island. He lived in the area, and asked us what we had done. I mentioned that we had taken a walk “into town,” and he laughed a bit and said, “Town?” I explained that if you have a grocery store, a school, and a church, you’re a town. And I told him about our walking tour of Stanyard Creek, Andros, Bahamas. After a few days on a private island, you get the itch to explore a bit more. We had taken some excursions,…

With so many activities, it’s time to wind down and have a little therapy. Kamalame Cay boasts the only overwater spa in the Bahamas. We had walked past the spa many times on our beach walks, but now it was time to visit with a purpose. The spa menu included many offerings, which can be found on Kamalame Cay’s website here. Given that our fair Wisconsin skin had suffered a bit from the sun, we opted for a low exfoliation body treatment, the Seaweed Botanical Wrap. It is described on the spa menu to include “a gentle dry brushing to stimulate circulation,” followed by the application of a “mineral-rich Seaweed…

There you will find the boat dock where you will be greeted and escorted to Kamalame Cay. Once on the island, you will be escorted to the front office to check in and then off to your villa. At each turn, there are guideposts to show you the way. Let’s head toward the beach villas and check out our villa, Driftwood. Welcome to Driftwood! There are plenty of places to relax,…

“I’ve never been to a place where the palm fronds clack together,” my husband said while sitting back in his beach chair facing the calm of Kamalame Cay. Coconut palms surrounded our chairs on what seemed to be our own personal beach. “You have,” I replied. “You have just never heard them before.” We have been to quite a few private beaches and luxury resorts in the Caribbean, but Kamalame Cay was distinctive from the rest. It was like nothing we had ever seen, or heard, before. There are no televisions. We thought we would miss that, particularly with the NBA Finals going on at the time of our visit.…
