Grenada had been on my radar for some time. I loved the idea of beautiful Caribbean beaches, waterfalls, rum, spices, and history all in one destination. On top of all the island had to offer, there was Spice Island Beach Resort, a family-owned and operated resort with a reputation for its island hospitality.

Spice Island Beach Resort Grenada

Spice Island Beach Resort began in 1961 as Spice Island Inn, and in 1969, was purchased by Sir Royston O. Hopkin and a group of investors. The resort, operated by the Hopkin family, was known for its excellence, having been honored by more awards than could be mentioned here, including AAA’s Five Diamond Award. Sir Royston is the only Caribbean hotelier knighted by the Queen of England. Although he passed away in 2020, the family tradition lives on.

Devastated by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the resort was rebuilt, and has seen many renovations and improvements since. The most recent renovation took place in 2020, and when the resort reopened in October 2021, it was better than ever. It was clear from our stay that the resort had a loyal following of guests who returned year after year.

Spice Island Beach Resort has what it takes to be a great Caribbean resort.

Grand Anse Beach Grenada

The Perfect Beach

Spice Island Beach Resort is located on the most beautiful stretch of Grand Anse Beach, the best beach on the island. The resort has a low profile, blending into the surrounding palms and sea grapes. The resort has 64 suites. Our Sea Grape suites were oceanfront. Outside the sliding door was a small patio with a  table and chairs and a small sofa. A few steps toward the beach and you will find reclining chairs and a hammock in your own private space. Beyond your private area are more beach chairs and the gorgeous Grand Anse Beach. You could be as private or public as you wished, and still enjoyed the beautiful beach at your doorstep.

Unforgettable Food & Drink

Spice Island Beach Resort includes all food and drink (with the exception of bottled wine), and the meals were amazing. You could eat and drink 24-7 without causing a stir.  You start the day with breakfast at Oliver’s Restaurant overlooking the ocean. A wide variety of choices are found on the menu, and there is also a buffet of items including fresh local fruit and juices.

For lunch, you’ll can dine in the Sea and Surf Terrace Bar with more stunning views and again, no shortage of choices.

Afternoon tea is available if you like, but we wanted to enjoy the incredible dining at Oliver’s Restaurant. The menu changed every night and we were met by creative dishes which were equally appealing to sight and taste. The menu at the entrance to the restaurant had a QR code which I scanned into my phone, and I still go back to look at the amazing menus. For example, as I write this, guests tonight have a an appetizer choice between seared scallops with nutmeg spiced cauliflower puree and pickled onions or roasted bell pepper cheescake with fruit chutney. Diners have selections from Appetizers, Potage, Intermediate Course, Entrees, Lighter Options, Vegetarian Options and Desserts. Each course has multiple choices using the ingredients and spices sourced locally.

I tried to conquer the Cocktail menu, but despite my best efforts, I hardly made a dent. And there’s room service if you are not up for dining at Oliver’s for the evening. When our son protested wearing long pants for dinner, an employee kindly showed him how to order room service and he was in heaven. We still made him join us for breakfast and lunch, and some dinners, but he loved the independence of being able to choose what he wanted to eat in his own room.

Comfortable Accommodations

The furnishings in the rooms are so luxurious, highlighted by the comfort of the Frette linens on the bed and a bath was furnished with Molton Brown amenities. The fridge was stocked with a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. There was a Nespresso machine and electric tea kettle along with everything you needed whatever your choice. And then there were the platters of fresh fruit and sweets upon arrival!

Lush Resort Grounds

The grounds were beautifully appointed with local trees and flowers. Paths were lighted and it was easy to find your way around. There are “his and hers” boutiques called Gatsby’s, where you can pick up some beachwear or other items, like the long pants our son “unintentionally” left at home. There is a spa for some relaxing body treatments, and a gorgeous beachside yoga pavillion with views that cannot be believed.

Excellent Service

Last, but certainly not least, the service for which the Hopkin family is known was present at every turn. Upon your arrival, you were greeted with a cool towel and the signature cocktail of sorrel and sparkling wine. Servers were kind and quick to bring you whatever you desired. The front desk attendants were helpful with every detail, including arranging for your departure COVID tests. It was clear why guests returned again and again, and we look forward to our next visit.

Next up, we’ll take a look around the island of Grenada, including waterfalls, monkeys, spices, and all the island has to offer!
