A Second Taste of Spice: Revisiting Spice Island Beach Resort, Grenada

    August 31, 2025 / No Comments

When planning a family trip to the Caribbean, Spice Island Beach Resort immediately comes to mind. Everyone in the family can do their own thing, eat and drink as much as they want, and enjoy the best beach on the island. We last visited in 2021, just after COVID restrictions were lifted, with our son, but this time brought the whole family, including my daughter and son-in-law. They are the adventurous ones, who search out a national park everywhere we visit. Grenada did not disappoint. They could search out the hikes through the mountains, visiting multiple waterfalls, and we could spend the day on the beach. We could all enjoy…

Sunday Afternoon at the Sunshine Shack, Rendezvous Bay, Anguilla

    May 18, 2024 / No Comments

We flew into Anguilla on a Saturday afternoon, so Sunday was our first full day on the island. We hit the beach early, and were just starting to think about lunch when we heard the music start up at the Sunshine Shack, just down the beach from our resort, Aurora Anguilla. We walked down the beach, and grabbed a rum punch. The bar was humming, and Garvey was working the grill, mixing the scent of grilled chicken with the ocean breeze. Omari Banks was doing an acoustic show that afternoon, and while we waited for the show to start, who would walk up to the bar but his father, Bankie…

Aurora Anguilla 2023: How Does it Compare to the Former CuisinArt Resort?

    April 7, 2024 / No Comments

When we first traveled to Anguilla in 2007, we stayed at the CuisinArt Resort on Rendezvous Bay. Since that visit, we have returned to Anguilla half a dozen times, staying at the CuisinArt again in 2014. In 2023, we returned to the resort, now Aurora Anguilla. Several people have asked how the Aurora compares to the CuisinArt. Overall the resort has seen many improvements, and here are our impressions from our stay in November-December 2023. Upon arrival, you are greeted with a cool towel and a cocktail (your choice of alcohol or non-alcoholic), with the flavor of lemongrass – my favorite! You are given your room key which was not…

Best Beaches on Anguilla: Rendezvous Bay

    March 10, 2024 / No Comments

One benefit of returning again and again to the same place is that you know the lay of the land. You know the best beaches, the best restaurants, and where to stay. After years of traveling to Anguilla, we gravitate toward the west side of the island, and favor the beaches on the southern side, facing St. Martin/Ste. Maarten. This trip, we returned to Rendezvous Bay. It has amazing views of the hills of St. Martin/Ste. Maarten, has calm water and soft sand, and you can walk to some of the best beach bars and music on the island. I’ll post shortly on our stay at Aurora Anguilla, which we…

    Just Back from Anguilla 2023

    December 22, 2023 / No Comments

We’re just back from our 2023 visit to Anguilla – our 7th trip to the island. We stayed at the Aurora Anguilla, and have loads to share. I know some readers have been interested in the comparison between the CuisinArt Resort (where we stayed in 2007 and 2014) and Aurora, so look for that to come. Overall, it was a week for relaxation and recharging, with beautiful beaches and fantastic food, and Anguilla never disappoints. Stay tuned!

Best Beaches in the Caribbean: Grand Anse Beach, Grenada

    March 8, 2022 / No Comments

When writers put together their lists of the best beaches in the Caribbean, Grand Anse Beach in Grenada is on everyone’s list. This two-mile stretch of white sand curving around the “grand cove” with a view of St. George’s is the most beautiful beach on the island and a favorite of visitors. Even on Saturday and Sunday when the beach is buzzing with activity, the beach never feels crowded. A stay at Spice Island Beach Resort means you have this beach at your doorstep. Or come for the day to visit the Spice Island Craft & Spice Market or relax with a cocktail at Umbrellas Beach Bar. Join us for…

Grenada’s Underwater Sculpture Park with Aquanauts

    February 28, 2022 / No Comments

When you travel, you can’t always plan for the weather. Luckily, in the Caribbean, there are more sunny days than rainy ones, but when you have some rain, it can change your plans. Ever since I began planning a trip to Grenada, I wanted to visit the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park. So we planned a trip with Aquanauts, and despite a bit of rain clouding up our view, we had a great trip out onto the water. Installed in 2006, Molinere Bay Underwater Sculpture Park was the first of artist Jason deCaires Taylor’s underwater gardens. The sculptures are intended to form a platform upon which coral could grow and provide an…
