    Cafe des Arts, Nevis

    August 13, 2017 / 1 Comment

Just a short walk from the ferry dock in Nevis, you’ll find Cafe des Arts.  Cafe des Arts is a casual cafe, located right next door to the Museum of Nevis History and the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States.  Walk along the avenue of flags on the waterfront, and you’ll spot the cafe. Have a seat at an umbrella-covered table and take a look at the menu.  You’ll notice that breakfast is served all day long, which is a hit with me.  They also serve lunch and host “Burger Nights,” quite popular with visitors. The prices are on the menu in…

    Nevisian Spirit: Four Seasons Nevis

    August 11, 2017 / No Comments

With so many places in the world to see, why return to a place you have visited before? Some people travel to the same location trip after trip.  There’s a certain amount of comfort with traveling that way.  You know the lay of the land.  You know how to get where you’re going, and you never are without a restaurant for dinner.   I like to explore and see as many places as we can, but there are some places we return to for just that reason – – you are familiar with your surroundings, you know you will have a great time, and you know you will be able…

Monkeys! Monkeys! Monkeys! On the Island of Nevis

    August 6, 2017 / 1 Comment

Tourists love them. Residents hate them.  They are pests – – cute, furry-faced, little pests.  Green vervet monkeys are known for entertaining tourists, but also for their destruction, causing islanders to ponder the best way to preserve one of Nevis’s biggest attractions, while at the same time protecting their island’s ability to prosper. Green vervet monkeys are believed to come with slaves to Barbados, St. Kitts, and Nevis from West Africa in the late 1600’s, with large populations developing by the early 1700’s. Their appetite seems to never be satisfied, and they’ll munch on a farmer’s crops if opportunity arises.  Their path of destruction extends beyond consumption of the island’s…

Catamaran Sail on Caona, St. Kitts and Nevis

    July 29, 2017 / 1 Comment

It’s time to get out on the water aboard Caona, a 47-foot catamaran in the Leeward Islands Charters fleet.  At the helm was our captain, Lennox Wallace, and our destination was Shitten Bay, a cove off the southwestern coast of St. Kitts. Caona is moored in Nevis, and the crew and boat met us at the Four Seasons dock for our half-day snorkeling trip.  Up went the sails, and we were off! Shitten Bay may not sound so lovely, but the word “shitten” refers to the acacia trees which grow in the area. “Shittim” is the plural of “Shittah,” the Hebrew word for the acacia trees, believed to be holy…

The Place to “Bee!” Sunshine’s, Nevis

    July 25, 2017 / No Comments

Our first stop on our 2011 trip to Nevis was Sunshine’s, a Nevis institution and home to the famous “Killer Bee.”  This trip would be no different, except this time I would avoid the sting that follows consuming three of those delicious rum concoctions.  After a long day of traveling, beginning at 2:00 a.m. Nevis time, there was no question as to what we would be doing that evening.  Things have changed a bit in the six years since our last visit, but Sunshine’s hospitality and the great food and drink have not. For first timers, I would recommend that you definitely try the jerk chicken and the ribs.  If…

    Bananas, Nevis

    July 22, 2017 / No Comments

Perched high above the Hamilton Estate, you will find a gem of a restaurant with gorgeous views, comfortable surroundings and fabulous food. Welcome to Bananas! I have to admit, on our first trip up to Bananas, we thought we had missed it and turned around to go back down the island.  We then saw another sign telling us that we had been going in the right direction, but had not gone far enough.  It was worth a little zigzagging once we made it up once again.  Once parked, there is a small path through banana trees and beautiful tropical plants to arrive at the restaurant. Once inside, it’s like you’re…

    Nevis: Something For Everyone

    July 14, 2017 / No Comments

When you tell others that you are traveling to Nevis, you may receive a puzzled look.  They may have heard of its sister island, St. Kitts, which lies just two miles off the coast, but Nevis has not come upon their radar.  Nevis is a 36 square-mile island, the center of which is Nevis Peak, rising to 3,232 feet.  Christopher Columbus discovered Nevis on his second voyage in 1493, naming it “Nuestra Senora de Las Nieves,” “Our Lady of the Snows,” referring to the small cloud, resembling snow, which is nearly always present at its peak.  To its north, you will find St. Kitts, to the east, Antigua, and to the…
