    Travel Photography Gear

    August 11, 2013 / No Comments

It’s time to start reviewing what photography gear I need to pack for this year’s trip.  For travel, it’s important to keep things light, but you do want to make sure you have the gear to get the images you want.  I have started keeping track of what I pack and what I use, and you can see my packing list and results from our past trips to Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, and Ireland by clicking those links. This year, we travel to Eleuthera! In anticipation of some great scenery, including the Glass Window Bridge and Lighthouse Beach, I’m beefing up my camera support.  I’ve added a Gitzo monopod with…

    What are Metal Prints?

    August 10, 2013 / No Comments

What are metal prints? And why do we love them? Metal prints display your image in all the all the vibrant, gorgeous colors of the Caribbean which you remember. These are not images printed on metallic paper. The image you select is infused onto specially-coated aluminum sheets, with a high gloss finish.  Metal prints don’t fade or ripple like paper prints, preserving your images as you first remembered them. Each image comes with built-in mounting hardware, which keeps your image away from the wall, and small pads keep your wall free from scratches.   We also love metal prints because aluminum is lightweight and easy to hang.  We originally had…

    New My Irie Time Shop!

    August 3, 2013 / No Comments

We’ve been working hard the last three months to bring you a new My Irie Time Shop.  With the re-opening of the shop, we have a number of new items to offer which we’re really excited about. (1) DIGITAL PAINTINGS The world of digital photography offers many avenues to explore our creativity.  Through a variety of techniques, we are able to manipulate our photographs to give the appearance of oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, or simply to render a more abstract impression of what we see through the lens.  With this new technology at hand, we are now able to offer some of our favorite images from the Caribbean with a…

Spirits of the Caribbean: Picante Margarita, Anguilla

    August 2, 2013 / No Comments

Our trips to Anguilla would not be complete without at stop at Picante, and a pitcher, or two, of their delicious margaritas.  For more on why we love Picante, read our report here. For margaritas at home, my favorite recipe comes from north of the border, from Rick Bayless, famous for his restaurants, Topolobampo and Frontera Grill in Chicago.  Rick’s recipe for his Topolo Margarita can be found on his website here, along with recipes for a lot of great dishes.  Cheers!

Spirits of the Caribbean: Caribbean Punch, Providenciales, TCI

    August 1, 2013 / No Comments

Bay Bistro’s Caribbean Punch is a bit different than most rum punches we’ve enjoyed in the Caribbean.  In addition to fruit juices, in this case, orange and pineapple juices, the Caribbean Punch at Bay Bistro, Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands, has vodka and peach schnapps.  The result is light and refreshing, and a bit less sweet. If you prefer rum in your punches, they also have the Bistro Delight, which swaps out the vodka in favor of rum, and a variety of other cocktails, one of which will no doubt strike your fancy. Bay Bistro isn’t all cocktails.  They have a wonderful menu, full of great seafood offerings, and a…

Spirits of the Caribbean: Raspberry Chili Cocktail, Virgin Gorda

    July 31, 2013 / No Comments

Included in our trip to Virgin Gorda with Dive BVI was a stop at Coco Maya Restaurant for lunch.  Coco Maya describes itself as an “open concept, beachfront Latin Asian Fusion restaurant with new tasty cocktails and a casual funky vibe.”  It has some of the most interesting combinations I’ve seen both with regard to food and drink.  A perfect example is the Raspberry Chili Cocktail, a blend of raspberry vodka, cointreau, lime, and cranberry.  The jalapeno chili provides just a touch of zip to the drink. For more on Coco Maya and our visit to Virgin Gorda, read our trip report here.  For our entire five-part report on our trip to…

Spirits of the Caribbean: Rum Punch, Salt Mills Cafe, Turks & Caicos Islands

    July 30, 2013 / No Comments

This colorful rum punch comes to us courtesy of the Salt Mills Cafe and Diner, located in the Salt Mills Plaza, Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands.  I couldn’t help but take a few sips before taking a this photo!  Decorated in bright primary colors, the diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and offers vegetarian and gluten free dishes. For more photos and journal entries from our trips to Providenciales, click here.  Cheers! Update:  Sources tell us the cafe has now closed. Oh well, you can still enjoy our travel photos from Providenciales!  And if you’re looking for a bite to eat, check out Hole in the Wall! or Da Conch Shack!

Spirits of the Caribbean: Ting with a Zing, Nevis

    July 29, 2013 / No Comments

While visiting the Library Bar at the Four Seasons Nevis, our bartender, Candy, mixed up quite a few cocktails, including this Ting with a Zing, made with CSR, cane sugar rum from St. Kitts, and Ting, a delicious grapefruit soda from Jamaica.  Or is it a “Ting with a Sting?”  I guess it just depends upon how strong it is! For more of the delicious cocktails mixed up by Candy, and more on our stay at the Four Seasons Nevis, read our trip report here.  Cheers!
