I was honored once again to be recognized by the North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) in its 30th Annual Awards for Excellence in Travel Journalism. I received an Honorable Mention in the category of Photography – Photo Essay for “Photo Tour of Key West,” on Film Road Trip. Work eligible for the competition was work first published between October 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021. When you travel, you can’t always plan for the weather. Luckily, in the Caribbean, there are more sunny days than rainy ones, but when you have some rain, it can change your plans. Ever since I began planning a trip to Grenada, I wanted to visit the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park. When we travel, we’re not much for tours. We rent a car and explore the island on our own, relying upon historical markers, maps, and conversations here and there. However, when I take a tour, like we did on the island of Grenada with Mandoo Tours, I question why we don’t do tours on every trip. Mandoo was a wealth of information and a great conversationalist, and showed us places on the island we might have never seen on our own. I recently read an article from a fellow travel writer about how she had not traveled in two years, and regretted having missed a window to travel before the recent spike in COVID cases. I have to admit that I was hesitant to return to international travel given all the additional rules, and rules which seemed to change daily. I was fearful one of us would fail a test, tossing all our plans to the side. We’re just back from a Thanksgiving trip to Grenada. Travel was complicated a bit due to COVID protocols, but it was well worth the effort. When we planned the trip to Key West, I knew I wanted to visit Dry Tortugas National Park. Dry Tortugas National Park is located 70 miles west of Key West and is accessible only by seaplane, ferry, or by private boat with a permit approved by the National Park Service. The least expensive way to get to the park is by the Yankee Freedom ferry, which transports up to 175 passengers and takes 2 to 2-1/2 hours to reach the park. The seaplane costs a bit more, but you arrive at the park in 35 minutes and get an amazing view of Key West, the park, and everything in between.…
